Shane Virgo joined Long Flat as Senior Winemaker in 2008. Born and raised in country South Australia and the Adelaide Hills, Shane’s first job was with the newly established Petaluma.

Working for a small winery meant Shane was involved in all aspects of operations from cellar hand, vineyard hand, manager of barrel operations, sparkling wine coordinator, to cleaner, plumber, cook and forklift driver.

Shane’s ability to turn his hand to such a broad range of responsibilities and his obvious passion for the industry led Brian Croser to recommend that Shane undertake formal training, so he completed a Wine Science degree at Charles Sturt University. Upon starting study in 1993, Shane was promoted to assistant winemaker for Petaluma table and sparkling wines.

By 2000 Shane was promoted to Senior Winemaker at Petaluma and as the group grew, he took his skills to various areas of the business including Mitchelton, their USA joint venture in Washington State and St Hallets.

Shane says “My involvement in 31 vintages over the years has exposed me to many winemaking techniques and vineyards across many premium regions including Clare, the Barossa, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek and various Victorian wine regions.

"This has influenced my winemaking philosophy, which is getting it right in the vineyard to maximize the potential of the grapes in the winery. Attention to detail is critical. Wines should show distinctive regional characteristics as a result of vineyard input into the wines.”

The diverse range of Long Flat wines we have today are a testament to Shane’s success in achieving this goal as is evidenced by the recognition that the wines are receiving in recent wine press and in wine shows.
